A rough draft of a new article by knk
Investing abroad is part of the investment portfolio of many individuals and businesses. There is no doubt that it is an often lucrative choice.
It is also a choice that involves social and ecological values. Most folks would rather not "deal" with this aspect of their foreign investment plans. Yet, it must be taken into account because it is the driving force behind so many wars which have been fought through the ages.
Colonialism, conquest, independence movements, and revolutions are only some of the larger historical events we have seen often spearheaded by foreign investment interests. In today's world marketplace, some elements are different and more modern and investors are often totally unaware that they are participating in a new wave of the same old story of "pilage."
And the story doesn't always have to be negative and full of "collateral" damage and hardship for the most marginalized sectors of our global society. There are happy endings - there are cases of amazing intercultural exchanges occurring - of important knowledge sharing - of win-win scenarios where the foreign investor and the recipient/host culture both benefit greatly from each others presence.
But unfortunately, these cases are rare. At Instituto Conexiones we are working to make them the norm, rather than the exception.
The current "norm" shows symptoms of social and ecological unsustainability that will affect us all, particularly because of the level of population we currently contend with. There are no "last frontiers uninhabited by anyone" anymore.
Thus, we must pay attention to how we go about investing and interacting with communities outside of our own - particularly if crossing national and ethnic boundaries.
If you are a foreign investor, we have applicable solutions and practical tips for you. If you are looking to buy land in Costa Rica or any other Latin American country, we have particularly important information you may need to know to secure your investment and help Central America develop peacefully.
